I create a KYD “Kill Your Darlings” weekly writing prompt both publicly in the Writers of the Future Forum, and another privately in my Wulf Moon Patreon group. But I’m making this one public to celebrate that mankind is about to head back to the Moon! Well, around it anyway. It’s a start! It’s been far too long since those Apollo missions when I watched them as a kid on a black-and-white TV with rabbit ears! Exciting! Even more exciting than the Seattle Seahawks making it to the Super Bowl!
The image above is from the Apollo 17 mission. But today’s prompt comes from a famous astronaut, the second human to walk on the Moon: Buzz Aldrin, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module pilot! His impression of our planet’s satellite? He described the lunar landscape as “a magnificent desolation.” Dramatic pictures from the Apollo missions to the lunar surface certainly testify to this phrase.
So there’s your writing prompt!
Magnificent desolation
Play with it, twist it, see if it can take your story into deep space and beyond! The phrase could just as easily work for a fantasy story. Come on, baby! Let’s do the twist!
