You will see a bonus at the end of my Writer’s Block article–comments by Wulf Pack Writers’ member Glenda Thompson on writer’s block, and what she does to work her way around it. Due to the constraints of the article’s length, I couldn’t include some of the other great comments I asked the Wulf Pack to share, but I can share a few here with you!

Here they are with their honest expressions, shared with their permission.

“Writers block can happen to anyone, for both professionals and beginners such as myself. However, I’ve found that if I step back for a moment and assess my work, I can often find out what’s causing me to stumble. This will typically be: unrealistic situations, deviation in true character voice or action, or something my brain signals as being unreasonable. For me, writers block can also come when I’m tired, under a lot of pressure (or not enough pressure,) or haven’t plotted my story well enough. In these cases, I’ll be stubborn and push through. One more sentence. One more paragraph. One more page. I’ll plot one more scene and then write it. And soon, I’ll have picked up the pace again.”–Michelle J. Diaz, Wulf Pack Writer.

“Writer’s block for me specifically is perfectionism. I compare what’s written on the page to what I expect the final product to be after multiple edit passes and freeze. Suddenly my writing is crap, its not good enough and I am stuck.

“What helps me get out of it is Dean Wesley Smith’s advice to “Keep it fun.” I think “What would be fun to write? What am I curious about?” and follow that. Sometimes I need to work on a different project for a day and then I can jump back in. The key for me is to write something ASAP to break the block quickly or I’ll be stuck for days or even weeks. Writers block is always self pressure for me. And its about removing that pressure and getting back to the joy of writing–why I write in the first place”–anonymous, Wulf Pack Writer

“I’ve been struggling with some writers block for the last four months or so. Not a complete block, but a difficulty motivating myself. I have written at about half the pace I have set for a goal. I’ve seen three major reasons for the problem.

“First is conflict in the rest of my life. When difficulties arise, I find they get inside my head and take over for hours or days at a time. In such a time, I find it difficult to be creative.

“Second is disappointment in the results of my writing. I want to see improvement; I want my stories to be recognized at greater levels. I do get recognition, but it has been staying at the same level for years. Of course, this issue is due to my own expectations.

“Third is that I have had some plot and character difficulties in my novel that left me not writing even to my own desired level. I tried to push through those difficulties to keep writing, but could not succeed until I stopped and went back to work out the backstory and plot.”–Doc Honour, Wulf Pack Writer

“For me, writer’s block shows up when I have too much stress. It leads to self doubt and keeps me from flow state. I manage my stress level by exercising, meditating, scheduling my days efficiently, and zealously guarding my writing time. I also make sure to schedule in adventure – things that connect me to friends and family, spark new creative ideas, and allow my spirit to reset. Additionally, it helps if I create an ambience that supports creative thinking. I’ll play music that inspires me, maybe light a candle, grab a beverage, and tell my family Mommy is off limits unless someone is bleeding.”–Tara B McKee, Wulf Pack Writer

“Writers block to me is when I can’t enter a creative flow. It tends to show up when I have an unmet need somewhere in life. If I’m not taking enough time to destress from my job, I’ll end up not being able to get into creative flow and end up with a writers block. It usually happens when I stray from my work-workout-meditate-write routine for too long. Getting back to that routine usually solves the writers block.”–L. D. Burke, Wulf Pack Writer
