Congratulations to Wulf Pack Writer Daniel Cojocaru in the Mike Resnick Memorial Awards!

Once again the Wulf Pack Writers group celebrates another Finalist in the prestigious Mike Resnick Memorial Awards: Daniel Cojocaru!

This contest was founded in 2021 to discover, award, and feature the promising talent of an as yet unpublished science fiction writer in the spirit and memory of one of the most decorated writers in all science fiction history: Mike Resnick. It is a great honor for an emerging writer to be recognized as a Finalist by the contest’s panel of professional judges. From these four Finalists, Grand Prize, Second, and Third Place will be announced at Dragon Con, the largest multi-media and pop culture convention in the world focusing on science fiction, fantasy, gaming, and comics. Held annually over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, the event draws over 80,000 attendees!

Amaze! Amaze! Amaze! Congratulations, Daniel!!!

See that photo of the award’s trophy above? Zoom in. That was the very first, won by Wulf Pack Writer Z.T. Bright, presented to him at DragonCon, based on a prompt and KYD Kill Your Darlings exercise result created in my Super Secrets of Writing annual workshop. Since then we’ve had more Finalists than I can count, several having their stories bought and published in Galaxy’s Edgemagazine. Well done, Wulf Pack Writers!

Here’s what Daniel posted to our group’s forum on Discord when he announced his current result:

“Thanks so much for making me sit down again and again with all the rough edges that needed to be smoothed out with the edits. @everyone: Moon’s the gold standard for editors. Honest and kind criticism that provides the motivation to do the necessary hard work to make your stories soar. I would go without food if I had to to hire him.”

Thank you for your kind words, Daniel! But don’t go without food—you need your nourishment to keep on winning!😋

Here’s more about the contest and the 2026 Finalists announcement, copied from the File770 website:

MIKE RESNICK MEMORIAL AWARD 2026 FINALISTS. The finalists for the 2026 Mike Resnick Memorial Award for the best unpublished science fiction short story by a new author were announced on July 1.

The award is sponsored by Arc Manor Publishers and Dragon Con. The winner will be announced at Dragon Con during the annual Dragon Awards ceremony.

FINALISTS FOR THE 2026 AWARD

  • Natalie Carre (France)
  • Daniel M. Cojocaru (Switzerland)
  • Dougal Jackson (Australia)
  • Eric J. Juneau (United States)

This is an annual award sponsored by Arc Manor Publishers and Dragon Con that celebrates new authors. As well as publishing hundreds of books as author and editor, Mike Resnick was known for his “Writer Children”—paying it forward by helping new writers start their careers. This award was created to honor his memory and continue on his legacy by spotlighting the wonderful new voices in the writing world.

The first-place winner will get a trophy, a cash award of $250 and have their story bought (at the magazine’s prevailing rate) by Galaxy’s Edge for publication in the magazine. The second-place winner will be given a prize of $100 and the third-place winner a prize of $50.

Upcoming Wulf Moon LIVE Masterclasses and a Retreat!

I create a KYD “Kill Your Darlings” weekly writing prompt both publicly in the Writers of the Future Forum, and another privately in my Wulf Moon Patreon group. But I’m making this one public to celebrate that mankind is about to head back to the Moon! Well, around it anyway. It’s a start! It’s been far too long since those Apollo missions when I watched them as a kid on a black-and-white TV with rabbit ears! Exciting! Even more exciting than the Seattle Seahawks making it to the Super Bowl!

The image above is from the Apollo 17 mission. But today’s prompt comes from a famous astronaut, the second human to walk on the Moon: Buzz Aldrin, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module pilot! His impression of our planet’s satellite? He described the lunar landscape as “a magnificent desolation.” Dramatic pictures from the Apollo missions to the lunar surface certainly testify to this phrase.

So there’s your writing prompt!

Magnificent desolation

Play with it, twist it, see if it can take your story into deep space and beyond! The phrase could just as easily work for a fantasy story. Come on, baby! Let’s do the twist!

In other news, I’m off to Seattle today, then flying tomorrow to Superstars Writing Seminar in Colorado Springs. I’m looking forward to seeing some Wulf Pack Writers and other friends there, and then over a dozen of the Wulf Pack Writers at our annual gathering at the LTUE Seminar in Provo, Utah, next week! If you’re in the area, why not take one of my LIVE masterclasses on Wednesday, February 11th. You can still book one at the LTUE website. You can’t afford to miss these! Prestigious contest winners have come right from these Super Secrets masterclasses I teach there. Don’t miss out!

Can’t go to LTUE? I’ve got you covered! I’ve got a special event coming up May 1st through May 4th in St. Augustine, Florida. Wulf Moon’s St. Augustine Writing Workshop and Retreat!

This workshop and retreat will be held at the fabulous Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District. Check out the hotel HERE. Our group rate for our room block is only $155 a night (regularly $199 weekdays and $249 Saturday at that time). This special event is both a retreat, a workshop, and a story generation exercise by exploring the town of St. Augustine and then coming back to mission control for guidance! I guarantee you this will be the most unique writing workshop/retreat you have ever experienced. I have rented a fantastic 1500 square foot conference room to hold it in. Registration is $495 and the event includes a delicious Saturday breakfast and a Sunday brunch I’m having catered in our conference room for all attendees!

Message me here on my website contact form for more details!

But hurry! I only have a group block of ten rooms guaranteed at this great rate, and six rooms are already spoken for! UPDATE: Only two rooms left in our room block!

If you’re a writer, I hope you can join us! This writing retreat is going to be a blast! A rocket blast for those seeking to write winning stories!

St. Augustine? We have liftoff!

All the beast!

Enrollment is OPEN for the Super Secrets of Writing Annual Workshop

𝗘𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡! After I won Writers of the Future in 2018, I created a year-long annual workshop to help emerging writers learn common-sense story principles to help them craft winning stories. Since then, we’ve had at least twenty writers win prestigious writing contests like Writers of the Future, the Mike Resnick Memorial Award, the Story Unlikely contest, and more.

The vast majority were unpublished when they joined.

𝗘𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟴 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝘀𝘁. Winners come from our workshop every year, although they’re all winners to me because they chose to invest in their future and took up the challenges and assignments that lead to publishing success.

If you’ve got the Right Stuff and would like to give a turbo boost to your learning curve, the Wulf Pack Writers annual workshop is a proven path to success. There’s a reason we’ve won Best Writers Workshop six years straight.

Winners happen here.

Every. Single. Year.

“Wulf Moon’s Super Secrets are the most powerful writing resource I’ve found. What started as a workshop thread on the Writers of the Future Forum grew into a writing methodology that creates published and award-winning authors in record time. How fast? Everybody’s different, but using the Super Secrets, I went from writing my first short story to winning Writers of the Future in only eighteen months.”–David Hankins, winner, Writers of the Future

“I began writing speculative fiction in late 2019. But it wasn’t until 2022 when I took two masterclasses from Wulf Moon that I found myself leveling up. I landed my first three pro and semipro sales, joined Moon’s Wulf Pack Writers group of ambitious, hard-working fellow writers, and had fun along the way. The Super Secrets are like rocket fuel!”–Jennifer Lesh Fleck, writer

“Wulf Moon’s Super Secrets have helped me leap forward in my writing skills more than any other writing courses I’ve ever taken — and I have a B.A. in Creative Writing! I wish I’d come across his Super Secrets years earlier. They have shaved at least ten years off my learning curve for writing short stories.”–Crystal Crawford, novelist, CCrawfordWriting

Another Wulf Pack Writer Achieves Finalist in the Mike Resnick Memorial Award!

Since the inception of the Mike Resnick Memorial Award in 2021, I’ve posted a challenge to our qualifying Super Secrets Workshop/Wulf Pack Writers to enter this prestigious new SF writer contest. The winner is announced each year at Dragon Con‘s awards ceremony, receiving a beautiful crystal trophy and a $250 cash award.

In 2021, Wulf Pack Writers Z.T. Bright and Christopher Henckel were selected as Finalists, and Z.T Bright won the Grand Prize (his winner was created from my KYD Exercise). In 2024, our Scott Sands also received the honor of Finalist. And in 2025, Tara McKee took up our Resnick Award Challenge and is now one of six Finalists awaiting results to be announced at Dragon Con this year.

Congratulations to all that entered this year’s contest, and special congratulations to Tara McKee! We are howling happy for you, and hope your name will be engraved on the next crystal trophy!

“Wrangling your first professional short story sale is a lot like catching a fish with your bare hands. Sure, it can be done, but you’re going to need to know the secrets unless you want splash around like a fool for an embarrassingly long time.

“Moon promised me that if I put in the work he gave me, I’d reduce my time to publication. His KYD exercise has helped me move from not even sniffing a sale, to winning the Mike Resnick Memorial award.

“Moon is not just a keeper of (super) secrets. He is a keeper of promises.

“Do yourself a favor and discover this super secret.”  –Z.T. Bright, author, Winner of the Mike Resnick Memorial Award for Short Fiction

A World-Class Honor For Michelle Diaz of the Wulf Pack Writers Group

Congratulations to Michelle Diaz for her world-class honor in the Seattle Worldcon 2025 Short Story Writing Contest! Michelle is the winner of their Youth category with her story “The Dream Terminal.”

Her award? Payment of ten cents a word, a free Worldcon membership for herself and her guardian, publication on the Seattle Worldcon website, and publication in the special Worldcon hardcover anthology Grimoire published by Grim Oak Press!

We are extremely proud of our youngest Wulf Pack member. Michelle joined Wulf Pack Writers and our annual Super Secrets of Writing Workshop a little over two years ago as an unpublished writer and swiftly advanced. At seventeen, she earned Finalist in the Writers of the Future Contest, the largest talent search for speculative fiction writers in the world. She was one of two high school seniors awarded the Young Superstars Scholarship last year for the 2025 Superstars Writing Seminar. This year in the Western Region of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, Michelle earned two Gold Key Awards for her writing—this is their highest regional honor.

And now at eighteen, Michelle Diaz has achieved her first professional sale, and in a deluxe hardcover with a gorgeous, illustrated dust jacket at that! We applaud Michelle for her dedication to learning, honing her skills, writing fresh stories, and courageously sending her stories out to markets. Go Michelle!

Here are the kind words Michelle wrote back when I informed her about her win—this shows you her caliber. Shared with permission:

Thank you so much for forwarding this to me, Moon!

Thank you for all the time you spend with us in the Wulf Pack and for all the work you put into your Super Secrets. They have helped so many people, including myself, and I hope your knowledge continues to teach and guide people for many years to come!

All the best,

Michelle

We look forward to watching Michelle’s bright future unfold, and we certainly look forward to reading her story when the anthology is released this year at Seattle Worldcon. If you’d like to read it along with the other speculative stories, you can preorder the anthology today. Check it out! Grim Oak Press publishes beautiful, limited edition hardcovers for many bestselling authors like Tad Williams, Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and Terry Brooks! This is certain to be a quality publication. Cheers!

Watch the Writers of the Future Vol. 41 Gala LIVE Tonight!

Tonight, April 10th, 2025 is the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Vol. 41 award ceremony, streamed LIVE at writersofthefuture.com. Two of my Patreon members (seen above) will be there, stepping up to that glamorous stage to receive their trophies and give their acceptance speeches: Robert “Fred” Lowell, and Sandra Skalski! The Wulf Pack Writers group is gathering in our Discord Wulf Den in a watch party to cheer them on, but we hope you’ll do the same from home tonight. It’s an incredible red carpet event with all the glamour of Hollywood. In fact, some of us call it “The Oscars of science fiction and fantasy.” When you tune in online, you’ll see why!

Fred joined the Wulf Pack Writers group a few years ago after attending the masterclasses I teach at the LTUE Seminar in Provo, Utah. He joined the annual Super Secrets Workshop and Challenge and faithfully practiced the primary exercise the group works in to advance, the KYD: Kill Your Darlings Exercise. I’m happy to say Fred was published this year in LTUE’s annual anthology–I got a signed copy from him there–and now he’s following it up with his contest win and publication in the bestselling anthology, WRITERS OF THE FUTURE VOL. 41. Way to go, Fred! YOU HAVE LIFTOFF!

While we’ll be celebrating the achievement of all of these writers and illustrators, another writer we’ll be especially cheering for is Sandra Skalski. She’s a friend from Twitter that saw my posts when I launched my HOW TO WRITE A HOWLING GOOD STORY Kickstarter and got my Illustrated workbook and Howling book before the public release. When I launched my Patreon page, she joined here as well and remains a valued member. And then last year, I saw her name on the quarterly Q1 Writers of the Future winners’ list, and lo and behold, Sandra had won First Place! I wrote to congratulate her, and this is what she wrote back. Don’t worry, I asked for permission and Sandra said: “Feel free to share my thoughts. Your books truly helped me, and I refer to them often.” Here’s Sandra:

Hi Wulf

Thank you for your good wishes. And thank you especially for your wonderful books. I can’t tell you how many times I was stuck on a story and I opened one of your books and figured out the problem. I think focusing on heart’s desire was key for me. You’ve helped so many of us with your time and generosity. You rock!

I hope you’re at the workshop next year. I would love to meet you.

Thanks,

Sandy

Well, life has kept me from attending the event this year, but thanks to the live-stream, it won’t keep me from cheering both of these emerging writers on as they take the stage to celebrate their wonderful victories. Thousands enter this contest every quarter from around the world, and it truly is the greatest talent search contest for speculative fiction writers. Huge congratulations to Robert “Fred” Lowell, and Sandra Skalski!

Here’s where you can enjoy the live-stream of the event! Click HERE.

Would you like a copy of the anthology? Say no more. It officially releases tonight! Click HERE for your copy of Writers of the Future Volume 41!

Go Fred! Go Sandra! Go Wulf Pack!
