I’m hosting this special live event once again in the 500-year-old picturesque city of St. Augustine, Florida. I’ve rented the Hampton Inn Historic District’s beautiful 1,660 sq. ft. conference room for four days, and I’ve negotiated an exclusive group rate averaging $159 a night plus taxes for a double queen. The workshop/retreat runs four exciting days from Thursday, April 29th, through Sunday, May 2nd, 2027.

When I scoped out St. Augustine in 2025 after serving as Southeastern Writers Association Seminar’s keynote speaker, I knew I had found the perfect location to start a new chapter in my award-winning Super Secrets of Writing Workshops. The 2026 three-day event sold out, and now you are invited to join me on this new four-day story generation adventure in 2027!
The Program
Purpose: To inspire writers to generate an award-winning story or novel opening from the locale and history of St. Augustine. There’s 500 years of historic sites and events to work with here!
Method: Sharing my strategies to generate unique story ideas from the history and characters of the locale; allowing writers plenty of time to explore the historic sites to find their inspiration; guiding ideas, character, and plot through brainstorming sessions; providing a full morning to write your opening scene; sharing your opening with the class for additional guidance; and finally, giving you presentations on the most powerful tools from my arsenal to help you carry your tales to the finish line with the highest level of emotional intensity and craft that editors and judges crave. A moving story that rises like cream to the top will move judges to hand YOU the award and publication opportunity! I’ve done this for dozens of other writers. Why should you miss out?
Event Overview
Thursday, April 29: Hampton Inn check in from 3-5 pm. Orientation in our conference room from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, including instruction on 1) How to take historic events and locations and twist them into your Big Idea, and 2) The power of adding realism to your fiction through on-location study and specificity. For dinner, we convene at 7:15 pm at a nearby landmark, the Raintree Restaurant for delicious St. Augustine cooking!
Friday, April 30: Enjoy Hampton’s famous complimentary hot breakfast (and waffle bar!) in the morning, then head out on your Idea Hunt Day to enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of the city. The best way to tour the historic sites? We are just a few blocks from the Old Town Trolley’s main starting point, and we’ll provide a shuttle to get you there! Dinner is on your own, as we begin workshopping everyone’s ideas at 6:30 pm in our conference room. Session will conclude with a presentation on how to keep openings focused on the story target while capturing readers with title and opening page techniques. At 8:30 pm, you’re free to go back to your room to rest or write, or gather in the hotel’s lounge for socializing.
Saturday, May 1st: Enjoy a Hampton hot breakfast again (with waffles!) and use the day to focus on specific sites you’ve discovered to center your story idea within. Or do a daytrip to explore Anastasia Island, view its famous black-swirled lighthouse, or comb the sunny beaches for shells. Diehard writers may even wish to get some pages knocked out in their rooms. This is your retreat for you to design your perfect writer day! Just be back by 6:30 pm once again in our conference room for a special course on gripping openings and a new Super Secrets technique to design three-dimensional characters that jump off the page and into readers’ hearts.
Sunday, May 2nd: As Donkey said in Shrek: ‘We can swap manly stories, and in the morning, I’m making waffles!’ Grab your free breakfast when you like, then write your opening scene from your room or in our spacious conference room. Then enjoy a deli style lunch at noon as we gather in our conference room to workshop. After lunch, you’ll read your opening page or two for both my guidance and peer review. Or, if you’d just like to listen to what others came up with, no pressure, you’re among friends! After workshopping openings, you’ll enjoy fleshing out your story idea through prompts I’ll give you through my Super Secrets Story Plotter that covers the foundation principles of award-winning stories and novels. We’ll wrap up with two presentations on my most powerful Super Secrets that launch stories into the winner’s circle: 1) Gripping reader emotions through Interiority and Heart’s Desire, and 2) The power of the Noble Sacrifice, and bonus material on my methods to nail the bullseye in writing contests and pro publications.
Session concludes at 5:30 pm. Don’t miss our farewell dinner at another St. Augustine landmark at 6:30 pm. In 2026 we held it at the St. Augustine Fish Camp Restaurant, some of the best seafood in town (and gator!). In 2027 we might try another surprise in deliciousness to change things up, but wherever we go, stories shall be shared, bonds shall be made as we break bread together, and tears shall be shed as we say farewell, ready to return home to write!
Monday, May 3rd: Your cup runneth over! Sleep in. Check out by 11 am, or extend your stay before or after to make a vacation out of the event. Go forth and conquer!
Registration
Workshop registration: $499, which includes complimentary hot breakfast (and waffles!), four days of retreat combined with uplifting instruction, and my guidance on the new work you’ll begin there. Oh, and we’re throwing in a deli-styled lunch on Sunday—it’s a full day of writing, workshopping, and learning! With receipt of your registration fee, we’ll send you the link to our room block page to obtain our group discount.
Hampton Inn Historic District Group Block Discount: Our group rate for our workshop/retreat dates averages out to $159 per night, plus taxes. We’ve also added additional days mostly before the event, and an extra day after, for those that wish to enjoy more time in this beautiful town. Don’t forget that parking is at a premium in St. Augustine, and Hampton charges the typical hotel daily parking rate of $20/day plus taxes.
Reserve with your credit card just as you do at any Hilton brand hotel–must be at least 21 years old to register for our event and to reserve a room, you’ll need a credit card.
